Ready to leave Google Password Manager? Whether you're frustrated with PIN problems, concerned about security, or just want more features, this guide walks you through migration step-by-step.

Total time needed: 15-20 minutes

Why people migrate from Google Password Manager

Before we dive into the how, here's why users switch:

Issue Impact
PIN lockouts Locked out of all passwords randomly
Not zero-knowledge Google can technically access your passwords
Browser-only No standalone desktop app
Limited features No password health reports, emergency access, or secure sharing
Sync confusion Different passwords on different devices

If any of these sound familiar, migration is the right choice.

Choose your destination

Option 1: Bitwarden (Recommended for most users)

Best for: Users who want free, secure, and open-source

  • Zero-knowledge encryption (Bitwarden can't see your passwords)
  • Free unlimited passwords on unlimited devices
  • Apps for every platform (Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android)
  • Browser extensions that actually work
  • Open source and audited

Cost: Free (Premium $10/year adds 2FA support)

Option 2: 1Password

Best for: Users who want premium UX and extra features

  • Best-in-class interface and browser integration
  • Travel Mode hides sensitive vaults at borders
  • Watchtower alerts for compromised passwords
  • Family and team sharing built-in

Cost: $2.99/month (no free tier)

Option 3: Dosel + Bitwarden

Best for: Users who need to change many passwords after migration

If you've been using Google PM for years, many of your passwords are probably weak, reused, or compromised. After migrating to Bitwarden, use Dosel to automatically change them.

Workflow:

  1. Export from Google PM
  2. Import to Bitwarden
  3. Import to Dosel
  4. Auto-change weak/compromised passwords
  5. Export back to Bitwarden

Step-by-step migration guide

Step 1: Export from Google Password Manager (5 minutes)

On Chrome desktop:

  1. Open Chrome and click the three dots menu (⋮) in top right
  2. Click Settings
  3. In the left sidebar, click Autofill and passwords
  4. Click Google Password Manager
  5. Click the Settings gear icon (⚙️)
  6. Under "Export passwords," click Download file
  7. Enter your computer password when prompted
  8. Save the CSV file to a secure location

Important security notes:

  • The CSV file contains all your passwords in plain text
  • Don't email it, upload it to cloud storage, or leave it in Downloads
  • Delete it immediately after importing to your new manager

On Android:

  1. Open Chrome app
  2. Tap three dots menu (⋮) → Settings
  3. Tap Password Manager
  4. Tap three dots menu (⋮) → Export passwords
  5. Authenticate with PIN/fingerprint
  6. Choose where to save (we recommend Google Drive temporarily, then delete)

Step 2: Create your new account (3 minutes)

For Bitwarden:

  1. Go to bitwarden.com
  2. Click Get Started
  3. Enter your email
  4. Create a strong master password

Master password tips:

  • Use 4-6 random words: tiger-lamppost-coffee-sunrise
  • Add numbers: tiger7-lamppost2-coffee9-sunrise
  • Write it down and store it safely - Bitwarden cannot recover it
  • Don't use anything personally connected to you

For 1Password:

  1. Go to 1password.com
  2. Click Try free for 14 days
  3. Create account with email + master password
  4. Save your Emergency Kit (contains Secret Key needed for new devices)

Step 3: Import your passwords (3 minutes)

To Bitwarden:

  1. Log into vault.bitwarden.com
  2. Click Tools in the top menu
  3. Click Import Data
  4. For format, select Chrome (csv)
  5. Click Choose File and select your exported CSV
  6. Click Import Data
  7. Wait for confirmation

To 1Password:

  1. Log into my.1password.com
  2. Click your account name → Import
  3. Select Chrome
  4. Drag your CSV file or click to upload
  5. Review and click Import

Step 4: Install apps and extensions (5 minutes)

Bitwarden:

1Password:

Step 5: Clean up (2 minutes)

Critical: Delete the exported CSV file

  1. Find the CSV file in your Downloads folder
  2. Move it to Trash/Recycle Bin
  3. Empty the Trash/Recycle Bin (important!)
  4. On Mac, also clear "Recently Deleted" if applicable

Optional: Disable Google Password Manager

  1. In Chrome, go to SettingsAutofill and passwords
  2. Click Google Password ManagerSettings
  3. Turn off "Offer to save passwords"
  4. Turn off "Sign in automatically"

This prevents Chrome from interfering with your new password manager.

After migration: Check for problems

Check for compromised passwords

In Bitwarden (requires Premium):

  1. Go to ToolsReportsData Breach Report
  2. Review any passwords that appear in breach databases
  3. Change compromised passwords immediately

Alternative: Use Have I Been Pwned to check individual passwords

Check for weak passwords

Look for passwords that are:

  • Shorter than 12 characters
  • Dictionary words
  • Reused across multiple sites
  • Containing personal information

Change weak passwords fast

If you have many passwords to change, doing it manually takes hours. Dosel automates this:

  1. Download Dosel (free for Mac)
  2. Export passwords from Bitwarden (CSV)
  3. Import to Dosel
  4. Select passwords to change
  5. Run automation (~30 seconds per password)
  6. Export updated passwords
  7. Import back to Bitwarden

Time saved: 50 passwords manually = 4-8 hours. With automation = 30 minutes.

Troubleshooting common migration issues

"Some passwords didn't import correctly"

Cause: Special characters in passwords or usernames can break CSV parsing.

Fix:

  1. Open the CSV in a text editor (not Excel)
  2. Look for passwords with commas or quotes
  3. Manually add these to your new manager

"My 2FA codes didn't transfer"

Cause: Google Password Manager doesn't store 2FA codes in the exportable format.

Fix:

  • Re-scan 2FA QR codes from each site into Bitwarden/1Password
  • Most sites have a "Manage 2FA" option in security settings

"Autofill isn't working in the new manager"

Fix:

  1. Make sure the browser extension is installed and logged in
  2. Disable Google Password Manager's autofill (see Step 5)
  3. Pin the extension to your toolbar for easy access
  4. Try refreshing the page

"I can't find some of my passwords"

Cause: Google PM may have saved some passwords separately on Android vs Chrome.

Fix:

  1. Check passwords.google.com for a complete list
  2. Export again from the web version
  3. Import any missing passwords manually

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep using Google Password Manager alongside my new one?

Technically yes, but we don't recommend it. Having two password managers creates confusion about which one has the latest password. Pick one and commit to it.

What if I forget my new master password?

Unlike Google, zero-knowledge managers can't reset your password. Prevention strategies:

  • Write it on paper and store in a safe
  • Use a memorable passphrase (4-6 random words)
  • Set up emergency access (1Password/Bitwarden Premium)
  • Tell a trusted family member

Is Bitwarden really safe if it's free?

Yes. Bitwarden is open source—anyone can audit the code. They make money from Premium features ($10/year) and business plans, not from your data. The free tier has everything most people need.

Should I delete my Google account passwords after migrating?

Only after you've:

  1. Verified all passwords imported correctly
  2. Tested logging into a few important sites
  3. Backed up the CSV somewhere secure (then deleted it)

Then yes, you can delete from Google to prevent confusion.

How long does the whole process take?

  • Export: 5 minutes
  • Create account: 3 minutes
  • Import: 3 minutes
  • Install extensions: 5 minutes
  • Cleanup: 2 minutes

Total: 15-20 minutes for a lifetime of better password security.
